No leads from your website – how to fix it using SEO strategy and content optimisation

Why your website isn’t generating leads – and easy ways to fix it!

I speak to so many clients with this exact problem. Like you, they’ve spent stacks of cash on their website – and invested hours of time and energy into trying to get it right.

Only to find their beautiful, shiny site sits there… doing absolutely bugger all for their bottom line.

  • No impressions
  • No clicks
  • No enquiries
  • And definitely no sales (see first three bullets)

If your website isn’t generating leads, the issue has nothing to do with effort or hard work. And (usually) it’s not because your business ‘isn’t good enough’.

Nope – it’s because your website isn’t set up to do what you need it to do – get seen, generate leads and grow your business.

The real reason your website isn’t generating leads

Most websites are basically a shop window for businesses. If you’re already there, you can have a look around and see what’s on offer.

But imagine that shop window is at the bottom of a dark street, in the middle of a thousand other streets, in a far-flung town at the arse-end of nowhere.

No signs. No maps. No well-placed adverts helping you get there.

It might look good. Read well. Tick all the boxes for ‘what we need to have’. But if you can’t find it in the first place – none of that really matters.

And that’s exactly what’s happening with a lot of websites.

They’ve been created to look good – but not to get found, guide people, and turn visits into real enquiries.

So you end up with a site that:

  • doesn’t show up properly in search
  • doesn’t speak clearly to the right people
  • and doesn’t lead anyone towards taking action

It’s not broken. BUT it’s also not working for you.

5 common problems that stop your website generating leads

1. Your messaging isn’t clear enough

Be honest. When someone lands on your website, do they know within seconds:

  • what you do
  • who you help
  • why it matters

If not – you’ve got your first problem. No-one is going to waste time digging around to find out what you’re offering them.

They’ll just click a button – and leave to look somewhere else.

This is the part of your website where you don’t need to sound clever – you need to be clear.

Make it ridiculously easy for the right person to think: ‘YES! This is exactly what I need.”

2. You’re not targeting the right keywords

If you don’t know much about keywords – don’t stress. Just think about the words and phrases people might use to find the kind of business you run or the service you offer. Your website needs to use these – and variations of them to attract traffic.

I see websites all the time that either:

  • don’t target keywords at all
  • or target the wrong ones – that don’t lead to business

And what that means is:

  • you don’t get found when your ideal clients are searching
  • the traffic you do get is the wrong kind

Arrghhhh.

Good SEO means getting found by the right people – at the right time (when they need your help!).

That’s exactly what I focus on in my SEO content strategy services – making sure your website shows up for the people who are actually ready to buy

3. Your content strategy is a mess

Content strategy… what’s that then?

And let’s be perfectly clear – banging another page on the website or an occasional blog with a randomly selected topic is NOT a content strategy.

It’s just words. More words that don’t work, taking up space on your website.

For a clear plan, you need to know where you want to be – and how to get there. This is where a proper SEO content strategy makes all the difference — not just more content, but content that actually drives results.

Websites that work have:

  • Pages with a defined role
  • Content with purpose
  • A user journey that makes buying easy

Not just ‘more words’.

4. Your CTAs are WAF (that’s weak as f*ck)

So, you’ve got someone on to the page (yippee), they read to the end (winning), and then they…

They what?

What exactly do you want them to do? Because with no clear CTA, you’re making it HARDER for them to buy into your business.

  • No obvious next step
  • No prompt to get in touch
  • No reason to act now

A winning website doesn’t just inform customers – it shows them the way (in giant flashing lights)

5. You think your website will ‘just work

This is the biggie.

A website isn’t a one-off project you launch and forget about. It’s part of a bigger system.

Without:

  • SEO
  • ongoing content
  • and a clear strategy

even the most gorgeously designed and eloquently written website will fall flat on its face when it comes to actually generating consistent leads.

What a website that does generate leads looks like

When a website is working properly, it feels different.

It doesn’t just look good – it works hard and does its job.

You’ll see:

  • clear, confident messaging
  • content people really search for
  • pages that guide visitors towards action
  • a structure that supports both SEO and conversion

And over time, it starts to do what it should have been doing all along – helping you get seen, make sales, and grow your business.

How to fix it (without f*cking it up)

This is where it’s easy to get things wrong. You know something isn’t working — but not exactly what.

And before you know it, you’ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink at it.

  • You’ve tweaked a few words
  • Redesigned a few pages (all differently – because why not!)
  • Mucked up your meta shizzle

And you’re desperately hoping that something – anything – works.

Spoiler alert. It won’t.

But the steps below will.

Step 1: Find out what’s actually happening

Repeat after me. DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING YET. You need to understand:

  • what your website is ranking for
  • how people are finding you
  • where they’re dropping off
  • what’s missing

This is where a proper SEO audit makes all the difference — giving you a clear picture of what’s working, what isn’t, and what’s holding your website back.

Not a generic report — but a clear view of what’s working, what isn’t, and insights into where the opportunities are.

Step 2: Fix the foundations

Once you’ve got that sorted – THEN you can start fixing the real issues:

  • messaging
  • structure
  • keyword targeting
  • page flow

This is usually more than just a few tweaks and surface-level edits. To see real results, you might be looking at a website overhaul or rewrite — built around your business and what your goals are.

Step 3: Build a strategy that supports growth

A great website is a thing of beauty – but even the best websites shouldn’t be working alone.

To generate consistent inbound enquiries, you need:

  • ongoing SEO content
  • a clear strategy
  • and a plan that builds visibility over time

This is what turns your website from a shop window at the arse-end of nowhere, into a well-oiled machine, driving traffic and converting into sales.

If your website isn’t pulling its weight…

All hope is not lost. Don’t stress – you’re not the only business owner in this position.

You do have a website and you don’t need to scrap it and start again (unless you really want to!) – you just need someone who understands your vision and has the SEO skills to help you achieve it.

This is what I do best. Working with businesses to fix their websites through:

  • SEO audits
  • website overhauls
  • and ongoing SEO content strategy
